I have been concerned for many years at how few people actually clean their carpets. It is only recently, however, that I have discovered that one of the main reasons is not, as I previously thought, that most people are either lazy or to be quite blunt, dirty, but rather that they are scared.

In some cases it is because the carpet salesman has indicated that there are dangers in having them cleaned through loss of colour, damage to pile or wet carpets that take weeks to dry or it may be they have been told by parents or grandparents that a cleaned carpet will attract soil and look dirty quickly. For others their concern is more serious as they are worried about the safety of the family and whether the products used may leave potentially harmful residues.

If you carefully choose the correct carpet cleaner nothing can be further from the truth. But how do you choose?

First, make sure the company you deal with is a member of the National Carpet Cleaners Association. The members of the NCCA are obligated to work to a standard which sets them apart from most other carpet cleaners.

In fact in 2008 the NCCA in conjunction with BSI, the British Standards Institute, produced the first published code of practise for cleaning carpets. Entitled, ‘Professional inspection, maintenance, cleaning and restoration of textile floor coverings’ it provides detailed recommendations as to how carpets and other textiles should be cleaned professionally.
